Business was the primary reason for travel to Ghana last year, accounting for 22.43% of these tourists, according to the Ghana Tourism Authority’s (GTA) 2024 Tourism Report.
The top four reasons for travel are distributed almost evenly: study or teaching (7.06%), visits to family and friends (22.29%), and holidays or vacations (22.15%). Conferences, cultural events, sports, and transportation were additional factors.
Over 1.13 million foreign visitors arrived in the nation via Kotoka International Airport, although Aflao, Elubo, and Paga were also significant land entry points.
With 137,862 arrivals, the United States topped the list of visitor origins, followed by Nigeria with 111,581 and the United Kingdom with 52,845. A sizable portion of Ghana’s incoming traffic came from these three nations, demonstrating the nation’s close ties to the diaspora and international business networks.
Ghana’s image continued to be overwhelmingly favourable. Ghanaian hospitality (94%), cultural heritage (39%), local food (28%), and safety (39%) were cited by a startling 88% of foreign respondents as the “ideal tourism destination.”
78% of visitors rated their overall experience as great, and they gave restaurants, wildlife attractions, tour guide services, and historical sites like castles and forts high marks.
Ghana’s continuing expansion will depend on stronger infrastructure, better service delivery, and the strategic promotion of its unique cultural offers as the world’s tourism industry steadies after pandemic-related setbacks.
The GTA thinks these elements, along with data-driven investment and policy, can solidify Ghana’s position as Africa’s top tourism destination for both leisure and business tourists.
